Shippers also put diamond-shaped hazard labels either on the containers – or container tags. Those rules and regulations apply to the hazardous material being transported and the driver’s responsibility regarding the transport and disclosure of those materials. However, commercial drivers of hazardous material have other obligations too. Aside from just holding a commercial driver’s license, federal and state DOT laws require a HAZMAT (hazardous materials) endorsement on the CDL before a driver can legally transport hazardous materials. Hazardous materials are anything that may potentially be dangerous to health, safety, or physical property during transport. The DOT considers the following materials hazardous: • Explosives • Gases • Certain solid materials • Flammable or combustible liquids • Other harmful materials Without this additional HAZMAT certification – and meeting the requirements for hazardous materials commercial drivers – a commercial driver can only transport the standard cargo any other commercial driver can drive.
