Copying comment of from other thread: You can learn the Vedas right from a guru or read the Vedas wrong from any number of sources. There are no other ways about it. So lets get some facts: • Vedas are supposed to be heard and experienced, not read. Thats why they are called shruti ('heard'). The inner meaning of vedas are revealed by contemplation, not understood by intellect. • Even for a fully focused traditionalist, a single Veda takes about 12 years of study. And that perhaps only a few methods (called pATha-krama) of chanting. • Within Vedas there is a verse that says the meaning will be opened to you as you contemplate. You can use all the dictionaries you want, but there is no substitute for inner experience and intuition. • Thats why you need a guru - because learning vedas is a parampara (handed over via teacher-student relation). Exact pronunciation, intonation, sequence, and method (krama) are extremely important. Wrong intonation (which is only heard and there are no written expressions for it) will give wrong meaning.
